We’re thinking of virtualize a MySQL Enterprise database on VMware and we’d like to know the correct way to license it.

There are four servers running the VMware environment, and one VM (with MySQL Enterprise) that can run on any of the servers, depending on the circumstances. Should we have to purchase four licenses (one for each server the VM can run in), or just one for the VM?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
We have a Windows 2008 R2 VM. We also have MySQL setup properly as a Windows Service.

Whenever we have to restart this VM, when it starts back up and starts MySQL, we always see "starting crash recovery" in the mysql error log.

Why would we always see this?

Is windows not properly shutting down MySQL? If I manually stop/start the service using the Services control panel, I don't see this message. I only see it when I have to restart the VM.

Thanks!

Just thinking up some project ideas and thought i'd think out loud and put them onto this forum.

We have a number of MySQL applications running and all have their different ways of backing up usually a shutdown of the database. Copying the relevant files and restarting the MySQL service or just snapshotting the machine as their virtual. What i was thinking of was to have a central VmWare based MySQL server that would act as a kind of hot swap / fault tolerance server that would communicate with all the other MySQL servers that were connected to it acting a bit like a data hub.

Then when the backups on the servers were to take place using tools like MySQL dump or other tools then as the database has two nodes, one would be down for backup then the other server would take the load from the primary server until the backup was complete then when that was finished the primary server would come back up online, sync its data and then fully use this server instead of the fail back server.

Is this kind of thing possible with the MySQL community edition? We have lots of systems and are thinking of converting some to MySQl.

I've got a dedicated server running mysql on centos that I've had for a couple of years now. The performance is not brilliant and I'd like to bring the solution more up to date with some cloud hosting. I'm quite happy to run my application server in the cloud but am concerned about performance on the mysql box. I've been looking at a hosted VMware option - would anyone here care to share their experiences with VMware?
The company I'm looking at is stratogen http://www.stratogen.net/products/vmware-hosting.html

i'm using mysql 5.0.77-3 on centos 5.2 32 bit, on esxi v4.0.
my vm has 4vcpu(intel E5420 on DL360G5) and 3GB of RAM.
i've started with 1 vcpu, then moved to 2 vcpu, and lately due to high load on the vm, i've reached to the limit of 4 vcpu on the vm.

i see in top that mysql consumes all 4 vcpus and half of it goes to user time, and half to kernel time.
i do not has any IO load on the vm or memory shortage, the cpu is just dead.
i've read on some forums that mysql does not deal well with multiple CPUs.
when adding extra vcpu to a machine should i add any configuration to the vm's OS or mysql config ?

Hi all,

I have Windows 7, VMWare Worstation 7 and Ubunto Hardy 8.04 client (I tried 64 bit client and 32). I have got phpmyadmin running on the host under apache. I have changed the config.inc.php to add multiple hosts and so I can access my MySQL instance running on a VMWare Ubunto Hardy client.

It is terribly slow. It takes 13 seconds to switch from one table to another. I have tried different instances of Ubunto running different instances of MySQL. I have allocated 512Mb and also tried 1Gb memory. Top says the system is doing nothing.

Same problem on all. I tried changing from NAT to Host Network to Bridged Network. They all work but they are all equally as slow. I saw someone saying they had problems with non matching names in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts so I have checked them. I access the host with hostname:

taer12

I have that in hostname and also in /etc/hosts.

Hi.

I wondering, soon I will need to setup MySQL 5.1.x for a ERP project we have. We are going to buy a new server to build virtual machines with Xen on Centos 5.5 and run MySQL on.

I have been running MySQL for a while but not one with the characteristics of a ERP.

I was reading some docs about mysql and exist a topic that took my attention.

Replica.

It say that we can have a Master + N Slaves and we can use the Master for writing to the DB(Insert, Update, Delete, etc) and use the Slave for Select querys, is say that this will make my DB faster.

If this is correct, I was wondering, is a good practice to make this with VM on the same Host?

vm1 ---> Master
vm2 ---> Slave

Or is better to be on different physical machines?

What other topic do u recommend me to read and have Ideas about how to speed up my DB, we have been working hard in normalization, now is time to see the server side.

Thanks!!!

After that I migrated to another host, and took the database intact with me. After I placed the database files, the new host which had ping of about 10ms got its ping as high as 250-350 ms. Can anyone advise as to what may be the problem? Is this the right package I'm running, or should I be using the 32 bit package for X86 processors?

Hello forum

I have two identical Red Hat EL 5.2 virtual machines - one running under Xen and the other using VMWare.

The VMWare virtual server swaps out a large amount of memory despite it having enough RAM to hold MySQL and is correctly configured.

The Xen Virtual machine works just fine and is an identical disk image copy of the VMWare virtual machine. The virtual servers have 8G of RAM and MySQL has 6G allocated to it.

I need to use VMWare though... has any one seen this before?

Details of issue:

VMWare issue:
- The resident set size (RSS) of MySQL is 3.5G bytes.
- MySQL virtual size is 6.7G
.. yet free memory is < 100M and swap in use is >800M

Under Xen:
- Virt memory size 6.7G, RSS is 3.5G
- free memory is about 3G - ie total RAM minus total RSS memory

Both the Xen & VMware VM's:have
- 8G ram
- Red Hat EL 5.2 x86_64
- MySQL 5.1.34
- identical disk copies of each other
- only run MySQL and few essential OS processes that don't use much RAM
- physical server has 32G RAM and only one 8G virtual server

Key settings from VM's:
my.cnf: innodb_buffer_pool_size=6000M
sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness = 0
limits.conf: * soft memlock 7340032 # which is 7G
* hard memlock 7340032

does any one know how to tune VMWare accordingly?

Im trying to create a replica of my working environment on my virtual XP running on my Mac OS vmWare fusion.
I first tried installing MySQL 5.0 but I got this error:"This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contract your product vendor".
Then I tried installing 5.1, but it fails when it tries to configure the local instance. Looks like the service cannot be created, and even if I try to manually start it up, root password is not accepted.

What am I doing wrong?
Is there a guide to MySQL over vmWare fusion/XP?
Thanks in advance.
