Are you unsure of the steps needed to get your Continuent Tungsten cluster up-and-running? In this live virtual course, we will teach you how to get from a single database server to a scalable cluster, or from a brittle MySQL replication system to a transparent, manageable Tungsten cluster.

We will discuss the benefits of leveraging Continuent Tungsten clustering with MySQL, and walk you through the steps to implement a Tungsten cluster in Amazon EC2. We'll cover the prerequisites, installing and configuring Tungsten, and best practices that are part of most production installations and proof-of-concepts.

Course Topics

- Configuring MySQL and the OS for proper installation Installing a cross-site cluster
- Schema upgrade on the master database server with minimal application downtime (switch operation)
- Automated fail over when a MySQL database server crashes
- Recovery of a failed master to a fully operational slave with a single command (recover operation)
- Switching database operations to a remote site (geo-clustering, cross-site 'switch' operation)

We will also discuss and demonstrate basic operations, such as adding and removing a cluster node, basic monitoring and troubleshooting, and discuss the basic failure scenarios.

Join us to learn how to quickly configure and provision highly optimized Continuent Tungsten deployments in the cloud or on-premises! Even if you can't make the live virtual course, it is still worth registering for the course as you will receive a notification when the replay will be available, to study on-demand at your convenience.
Your company has built a great new app and launched it in the cloud. And now you are seeing what many wish for: an exponential adoption of your app. But is your database tier really up to the job?

- What happens if your MySQL server fails?
- Can you fail over to a replica quickly?
- Do you even have a replica to fail over to?
- Can you keep your app available even as you upgrade your database schema or add additional or more powerful database servers?
- Can you easily scale read operations by load balancing them across a set of replicas?
- Do you have a way to maintain a set of data that is globally accessible, across Amazon EC2 regions in the USA, Europe, APAC, Japan etc., and that allows app users to get to and update their data with minimal latency, no matter where they are located?
- How do you make sure that an update made in a database in Japan gets propagated to databases in Europe, USA, APAC etc. with minimal latency?

This webinar focuses on the ways that Tungsten Enterprise can help you to solve these issues by combining local MySQL clusters, for high-availability and scalability, with cross-region, multi-master replication to maintain a globally distributed database.

Hello,

The new ClouSE storage engine for MySQL provides fully functional, transactional and ACID-compliant relational data management on top of cloud storage such as Amazon S3.

Designed and optimized for cloud storage from ground up ClouSE uses strict consistency enforcement, compression and caching techniques to smooth out cloud storage adoption bumps such as non-strict data consistency, high-latency storage access, and higher storage access failure rate due to network failures. ClouSE implements data encryption to provide full data confidentiality in the cloud, so cloud storage can be “plugged into” MySQL in a seamless and secure manner.

For more info please see http://www.oblaksoft.com or just download ClouSE v1.0 Beta for free at http://www.oblaksoft.com/downloads :-)

Hello,

It should be possible to connect to mySQL on AWS via SQL Workbench installed on my Windows PC -- shouldn't it? I want to be able to design the database on AWS mySQL through SQL Workbench.

Of course, this will require using SSH. SQL Workbench is pointing to the key file created on AWS. And, I have entered the ID/pwd for the AWS mySQL.

However, when I try to connect, I get the following error:

Error connecting SSH Tunnel: Could not open socket to 127.0.0.1

Clearly, SQL Workbench is not even getting to AWS. It fails at opening the SSH tunnel on my local PC.

By the way, what is the SSH ID/pwd on my local PC? How do I configure it?

FYI -- the web app is written in python/django.

- backup, compress and copy DB data over WAN from one region to another
- add VNC service
I'd prefer to pay by the piece instead of hourly. That way someone who already knows this stuff inside and out can do it in minutes and get paid for their knowledge; or a newbie can dive in and take days but get paid to learn and figure it out.
Do I went and looked and noted that Im only using 63% of the volume my database is on. Im confused here, what am I missing? Could my database size be set?

Hi,

I have recently faced mysqld_safe issue. When i issued top command in my server it showed me that the mysqld_safe consumed 40 % of the cpu process..So I had to kill the mysqld_safe process and things came back to normal. This happened when I used lighttpd web server. When I browsed through many of the forums they suggest that mysqld_safe script has to be modified.

Earlier I was using apache webserver where in I never faced a issue like this. I just want to know if I need to do any additional configuration on lighttpd to work with mysql server? Can some one tell me why the mysqld_safe consumed high amount of cpu process??

Thanks in advance

The message similar to below was sent to oraclehelp_ww@oracle.com few days ago, but there is no reply, so I post the inquiry here:

Our company plan to build a commercial Software as Service (SaaS) application using MySQL database to be hosted in Amazon EC2 platform. May I know whether our company must pay for licensing cost of MySQL database to legally use it for commercial application hosted in Amazon EC2 platform? If the answer is yes, may I know how much?

Also, the "Subscribe to MySQL Enterprise on Amazon EC2" link http://www.mysql.com/products/enterprise/ec2.html is broken.
Please advice.

I'm having the oddest problem. I use Ubuntu 10 LTS on 3 Amazon EC2 "large" instances, for Drupal hosting. All three servers are seeing the same issue, where root gradually fills up with files that I cannot see by any means. ls -a , du , nothing seems to see these files except for df. And when the drive gets full (after about a week), the server really behaves as if the disk is full... so I believe that df is correct here. The moment I restart mysql, all that invisible data disappears, and everything is fine again.

The MySQL datadir is on a separate device (600GB EBS mounted at /ebs ), so it's definitely not MySQL data. And /tmp doesn't have anything visible going on; certainly not something that would take up the 9gb that are normally free.

I suspect that something is not releasing file handlers correctly. For all I know this could be happening with all programs, but MySQL is the only thing running that would use enough temp space to be noticed. Each server has some applications that happen on it uniquely, but since it's happening on all of them I figure it's the common elements that count. The servers are a clean install, running Apache2 (PHP 5.2), MySQL, and SSHD. All three servers were installed from the official AMI.

Dear all,

I am having a difficult problem with Amazon EC2 and our database.

We would like to redimension the partition of the virtual Operating System from 4GB to 10GB at least without losing all our data/scripts. At the moment our 4GB is not sufficient.

Another option it seems to be using a HD Virtual (EBS* - elastic block store) of 10GB as an instance of our previously installed Operating System.

A final option we believe would be to have a AMI with 10GB OS space + 10GB for storage.

We need help with a step-by-step guide for beginners in getting a solution set up urgently so we can have our server up and running, this is absolutely critical as the site is just waiting for this to be able to be launched. I have already tried posting in the Amazon forum but obtained no reply and cant find a contact number: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=44927

I have a simple two tier setup on EC2 with one webserver and one DB server.

I do plan on scaling in the future though, so I have made some DNS A records and CNAME anticipating some horizontal scaling.

One thing I'm having trouble with though is mysql access control.

For example, I'd like to create a user in MySQL that can only connect from localhost and from my web server. My webserver has an A record in my DNS (dynDNS) pweb1.mydomain.com , and a CNAME to it of pweb.mydomain.com.

I'd like to setup the access record in MySQL to allow the db user (from my web application) to connect from 'pweb.mydomain.com', but I always get an error like:

Access denied for user 'myuser'@'174.129.34.65'.

So obviously it's an issue with MYSQL being very strict about the access control. Is there a way I can tell it to accept a CNAME alias, or do some sort of loose IP checking?

Hi,

We have serious stability issues with mysqld running on Linux hosts in EC2, with all of its data and log files stored on an EBS volume. We keep a slave purely for hot backup and failover, and when the master goes down, we can usually bring up the slave as a master without any issues, and then create a new slave.

But it's *very* problematic that our master will just go down. The master host keeps running fine, but mysqld won't respond to anything, and can't even be killed with kill -9. The 'mysql' and 'mysqladmin' clients just freeze and can't be caught with ^C or ^Z. The jobs that take EBS snapshots every 15 minutes also pile up in ps, never going away, but never completing either.

This happens in both our production and staging environments, which are similar, but production runs on large instances (with Centos 5.2 x86_64) and staging on medium instances (with Centos 5.2 i686). mysql-5.0.45 in all cases.

Has anybody experienced similar mysqld stability problems in EC2, and if so, how did they deal with them?

Thanks in advance.

and everything went pretty well - I was able to create a database, create tables, add data, and query the database.

Next, I installed Java and uploaded a Java application that processes text files. The Java application creates a new database and populates several tables.

The Java application completed without error and all of the log files look great. If I look in the ../lib/mysql directory the database directory exists and includes all of the database table and index files.

If I issue "show databases" the new database "trec_query" exists.

mysql> show databases;
information_schema
mysql
test
trec_query
+--------------------+
4 rows in set (0.00 sec)

*** However, if I try to connect to the database I get ERROR 1049 (42000) unknown database. Note: I can connect to the mysql and test databases, just not the database created with the Java program. The same Java program runs fine on my laptop. I've also used the same user and password for creating all databases.

mysql> connect treq_query;
ERROR 1049 (42000): Unknown database 'treq_query'

I'm perplexed, any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello everyone,
I think this would be a common issue but i have searched the forums and searched google for going on 3 hours now and havent found anyone with my exact issue.

Please dont flame until you see the full issue.

I did a fresh mysql install on a Fedora Core 8 box.

I started myql, tested it, and stopped it.

I created a new formated mounted volume (/ebs)
I went to /var/lib/ and typed: mv /var/lib/mysql/* /ebs/mysql/
I edited my.cnf and changed all the locations.

Being that it is fedora, and there are some known bugs with the user and pinging
I did the following: vi /etc/init.d/mysqld
And i changed the line which mysql uses to ping itself to verify it is installed

When i try to restart it: /etc/init.d/mysqld start
it says: "Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon."

Looking further into it, I tried: mysqladmin -uroot ping
"error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!"

I have checked both /etc/init.d/mysqld & /etc/my.cnf and neither of them have anything pointing to /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

I specifically set the socket file to be /ebs/mysql/mysql.sock

Also it does start the server (ps -a|grep "mysql") does show it running,

if i try mysql -u root
"ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"

Does anyone know why there is something still pointing to the old directory???

Please help me, this issue has been plaguing me on all of my server installs recently, and i need to find a solution

Thanks

Scoring MySQL data on the cloud - data mining on the cloud. (no replies)

MySQL users have in general used tools such as R and SPSS for data mining and to build statistical models. There is even an R package that builds an interface between R and MySQL (called RMySQL). Both R and SPSS (as well as a host of other statistical tools) are able to export PMML (Predictive Model Markup Language) which is the standard way to represent data mining models (see dmg.org).

We have recently shown that one can score MySQL data on the Amazon Cloud using the ADAPA scoring engine. If your data already resides on the cloud, that may be an advantage.

If you would like to find out how we do it, please see our blog on the Smart Data Collective website:

Does performance improve with repetitive queries? (no replies)

I have been doing some tests on mySQL on an Amazon instance (XLarge, 64-bit Centos5 with MySQl vers 5.0.22)
I have a query that runs on a somewhat huge table.

I have set the query_cache_size to zero as I need to see the effect of "table warming up" when i execute the same query many times repeatedly.

My problem however is that I would actually expect that the time it takes to run the query would decrease as i run the query many times - sort of like 1 min, 50 secs, 40 secs, 25 secs etc...

This doesn't happen and sometimes successive queries take longer that the first time. Below is an excerpt of the results I get:

8min 12 sec;1 min 39.73 sec;10min 15.08 sec;6min 45.15sec;7min 48.33sec

Can someone explain why i would get such results? Is there something I need to check on say my config?
