Dear Database Support Professional,

I am Database Administrator and I am writing to ask for your help in responding to a 10-12 minute survey for a degree requirement on relational database support professionals in the USA. Please note that the respondent is completely anonymous. If I don’t get this portion of my degree completed by the end of this semester, then I would have to wait for another year which entails additional costs and time on me. By completing the survey, you will be contributing to research in our field and also there is the satisfaction of having helped a fellow professional and a fellow human being attain his goals. I believe a good turn always bring another in some way in our lives. I therefore kindly beg for your help to a fellow database professional by completing this survey. The link to the survey is provided below. If possible please forward to other database professionals or groups:
Thank you earnestly for your kindness.

organic search engine marketing (no replies)

Internet marketing's newest thing is organic search engine optimization. Almost 50% of consumers start the buying process with an online search using Google, Yahoo, or similar. Potential customers are letting the search engine fingers do all the walking these days.
Search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine optimization (SEO) are nothing new. Both of those concepts have been around for a few years. As these disciplines have developed and grown more nuanced it was necessary to distinguish them further and add the organic SEO designation.
Not everyone knows what "organic search" is.
Listings that result from a search that are not paid advertisements are considered to be organic. For instance, when a user types in a term or phrase in the empty Google box what results are some sponsored links and advertisements, usually on the right side of the browser or along the top of the page, and a list of links to various websites, usually on the left side of the browser window. These links could be to news reports, personal blogs, article directories, or many other types of websites. As opposed to being paid advertisements, links make this list due to their relevancy to the search topic or words.
Acording to Google, many more people click through these links than those of the "pay per click" links. Not surprising since most people would rather go to a site that was especially relevant to what they were looking for. Customers are understandably skeptical when it comes to advertising language. They do not want to be manipulated or feel like they are being lied to.
That doesn't mean that paid advertising links are dishonest. Just because a link makes the top of the page in a list of organic search results doesn't mean it can be trusted. In the past it was possible to inflate a page ranking simply by repeating the key words or phrases over and over. This is known as "key word stuffing." It is certainly not a good strategy. Besides, neither Google nor customers are stupid.
Searchers find it helpful to see a brief excerpt or description below the link. This allows for quick scanning of the list to see which link is best. Although all the links are relevant, some will be more relevant than others.
Organic search engine optimization attempts to make the most out of every web page. It is a completely legitimate method that seeks to maximize the impact of content that a business has made available to would-be customers. What good is it to have a great product if knows one knows about it? Good practitioners of this approach will stay on top of how search engines like Google determine where a page should rank in an organic search. It is an ever changing algorithm so just because something was effective last year doesn't mean it will work this year.
Shortcuts or tricks usually won't work for very long. Smart, honest organic search engine optimization will always be more effective.

Hi,

This is the reply for the posting under subject

'Need help in accessing IMS DC screens from user point'

The below will try to make you understand very basics of IMS DC online environment. I welcome any discussions on IMS.
The following are required to invoke a IMS DC Online screen.
1)	As you login to CICS region to invoke CICS Online screen, you will have to login to IMS DC Online region to invoke IMS Online screen.

2)	Each IMS DC screen is associated with a transaction code, this is of 6 bytes. Lets assume IMSTRN. Once after successfully logging into IMS online region type the command
a.	/IMSTRN                     To invoke a IMS DC Screen
3)	Remember, at each and every time the screen is invoked the associated application program also, gets invoked and executes and hence the transaction is executed. The IMS online screens can be of three types Menu Screen / Inquiry Screen / Update Screen.
4)	The IMS DC screen is defined using MFS. (MFS – Message Format Service), this is coded using assembler language, this is all about defining
1.	Screen layout
2.	MID (Message Input Descriptor)
3.	MOD (Message Output Descriptor)
A MFSGEN has to be done once the MFS is coded completely. At this point, before starting to develop the application program the screen layout that you had developed can be viewed on the IMS terminal using the command /FOR Screen_ModName
Screen_ModName is the name given for MOD definition on MFS
5)	Application program may be (COBOL, PL/I) & database may be (DB2/IMS DB) should be developed to use the defined screen.

Also, see the discussion thread running on EXPEAT FOAUM on this topic.

Regards,

store and retrieve BLOB db2 vs mysql (no replies)

I used db2 to store large BLOBs and described these datatypes as follows:

"blob(209715200) not logged not compact"

my first question:

WHERE (HOW) can I set my blobs in mySQL as "not logged not compact".
Are there any similar keywords for "not logged not compact".
WHERE (HOW) can I set my blobs in mySQL as not compact "not logged not compact"??

In db2, I set these 4 properties to avoid a out-of-memory-exception (heap space) when retrieving the BLOB-File from the database (without the need for changing my java heap space):

fullyMaterializeLobData=true;
fullyMaterializeInputStreams=false;
progressiveStreaming=2;
progresssiveLocators=2;

In mySQL, I have to change the property:
max_allowed_packet = 1G (so my maxBlob can be 1G)

However, in mySQL, I get always a out-of-memory-exception (heap space) when not enhancing my heap space.

so my second question:

Are there any similiar properties in mySQL for ??:

fullyMaterializeLobData=true;
fullyMaterializeInputStreams=false;
progressiveStreaming=2;
progresssiveLocators=2;

I am curious as to the capabilities of MySQL as an enterprise DBMS and how it compares to DB2 regarding performance, scalability, ease of management, support…the whole gamut. Can you respond with personal beliefs and experiences that anyone there has regarding the subject including any large clients you know that use MySQL and how it is working for them. I welcome all comments.

Hi,

I'm migrating from a DB2 database to MySQL.
I've managed to get all the data and structure into the MySQL database, using the migration tool (generic JDBC to MySQL). I run into some problems running the application that is using the database.

As it appears the application that we are running is expecting all tables and columns to be in lowercase.
I the set lower_case_table_names option to 1, so all tables get created with lowercase, but all columns are still created in uppercase.

Is there an option in the migration tool to force everything to be created in lowercase? If not, is there a script or tool that can change all column names to lowercase after the migration?

hi all,

right now i'm trying to migrate from db2 running under linux to mysql v5.1.

i manage to export out the db2 structure & data into a del (ascii) file.
but when i try to load the data from the del file to mysql table, it generate an error.

below is the load data infile syntax i use =
LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:\\Migration\\del\\TABLE01.del' INTO TABLE TABLE01 FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\n';

and below is the sample layout of del file (in the above case is TABLE01.del) =
1,0,"2007-07-31 00:25:12"
2,0,"2007-07-31 14:09:00"
3,0,"2007-07-31 00:00:00"
4,0,"2007-07-31 00:00:00"
5,0,"2007-07-31 00:00:00"

and below is the TABLE01 structure =
FieldName, Type, Null, Primary
------------------------------------------------------
MY_TABLEID, int(11), NO, PRIMARY KEY
CNTS, int(11), NO, NOT PRIMARY KEY
INSERT_DATE, datetime, NO, PRIMARY KEY

the error i encounter is =
ERROR 1292 (22007): Incorrect datetime value: '"2007-07-31 00:25:12".....

i do some trick by trying to remove the qoute sign from "2007-07-31 00:25:12" so the del file become =
1,0,2007-07-31 00:25:12
2,0,2007-07-31 14:09:00
3,0,2007-07-31 00:00:00
4,0,2007-07-31 00:00:00
5,0,2007-07-31 00:00:00

And i do load data infile again with same command =
LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:\\Migration\\del\\TABLE01.del' INTO TABLE TABLE01 FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\n';
and it was successful.

to me it is very strange, since i can do a sql insert using "2007-07-31 00:25:12" for example: insert into TABLE01 values (11, 22, "2007-07-31 00:25:12") successfully without any error!!!
in fact, when i use a MySQL Administrator tools, and i export out the data from TABLE01 into CSV, then i found that the structure is exactly the same with del file generated by db2.

do i make any mistake??

or do i need to initialize something before i call
LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:\\Migration\\del\\TABLE01.del' INTO TABLE TABLE01 FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' ...?????

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.
3) I would like an Opensource solution or even code based solution (Sample of what someone else is doing)
4) I would like to be able to schedule this.
5) This is a partial data set. Tables and columns not the whole DB. (Item Master, Purchase orders, stuff like that)
In MSSQL, I was able to use DTS (Data Transfer Service) to accomplish this task rather easy because I could schedule the job. Below are the details of what I am trying to accomplish.

1. Transfer the Item number and shelf life days from DB2 to MYSQL server. Call the MySQL table ItemShelf
2. Run a Stored procedure that will update the shelf life days in MySQL table Items using ItemShelf.

What is the best way to accomplish this and automate it?

The reasons I have to migrate from DB2 focus on the simple fact that DB2 UDB can be a weak link in the datacenter. The three issues are simply: people, money and technology.

People.
=======

The lack of DB2/UDB experts is a fundamental problem. I?m referring to people who really have this database down cold. People who can implement best practices, set up optimal configurations, know DB2?s SQL dialect by heart. I think there are virtually no experts who are looking for full-time employment. I have talked to some consultants, but it?s very difficult to find qualified people who are looking for full-time work. If you have a solid DB2 UDB team in place this doesn?t matter that much. It seems that few organizations using DB2 have the staff in place to handle this database. IBM’s acquisition of Informix and short lived push to migrate customers from Informix to DB2 backfired and has left some customers with unsupportable DB2 environments.

MySQL is simpler to configure and manage, has a shorter learning curve, and and with the zealous community supporting MySQL, you can get answers to many questions in minutes. So, when you?re making the decision to grow the expertise you need in house (since it?s so difficult to hire), it?s so much easier with MySQL.

Money.
======

Saving money on DB2/UDB support will actually show ROI in year 1, if you turn off 2 CPUs of DB2 and buy a one server MySQL Network Platinum support contract. MySQL Platinum (the highest service level) is about $5000 per server, not per processor. If you can get enough traction with MySQL and downsize DB2, this will lead to significant savings on a medium SMP machine.

Technology.
===========

MySQL core technology is reliable and solid as a rock, and is in use at many (tens of thousands) of places with diverse hardware, operating systems, applications and transaction rates. MySQL has a strong community helping the core developers build the product and they have a good reputation for quick turn around on bug fixes. MySQL supports a significant portion of the SQL standard, MySQL has replication, clustering, and very high performance. MySQL?s implementation of SPL is close enough to DB2?s implementation that the changes to stored procedures should be straightforward and mechanical. Also, datatypes should be close enough to make the schema changes mechanical. It?s likely that the application changes can be limited in nature. Also, i have not tested this extensively, but the SPL (Stored Procedure Language) used by MySQL is very similar with the DB2 SPL. Also, some of the compelling features of DB2 include support for gigantic multi-note federated databases. I’m not talking about migrating them. Moderate-sized single node databases are the candidates I’m talking about.

O.K., so with all that said, let?s stop reading blog entries and put together some migration plans.

Hi frends
All of u have been really helpful in suggestions..here wud like to ask for one more help

In DB2 STORE PROCEDURES im trying value of sequencely generated number to a variable seqnum which i have to use in the naming convention.
I am trying it this way

CREATE SEQUENCE sample_SEQ
|      START WITH 0
|      INCREMENT BY 1
|      NO MAXVALUE
|      NO CYCLE
|      CACHE 20;
|
select (NEXT VALUE FOR SAMPLE_SEQ) into seqnum from sample_seq;
|
CAN SOMEONE KINDLY SUGGEST IF I M DOINT IT IN THE RITE WAY OR IS THR NEOTHER WAY TO DO IT... im writing the output of this SQL SP to txt files which would be recognized by their unique seq no...

Thanks in advance..     :)
