Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'

Hi,

I used the binary distribution mysql-standard-4.1.9-pc-linux-gnu-i686 and am trying to get the db up and running.
So it looks like the db starts but can't connect to it.

Also it looks like my mysql.sock file has landed up under /var/lib/mysql instead of under the /tmp directory But looks like the mysqladmin is looking for it under the later.

Is this a config param that is messed up some where.

thanks
