Personally, I would say "it depends!"

If storage space is no object, then I'd just drop it into the database. You can always make the columns large enough to hold most images, and that way the image will always be stuck to the product data. And then you don't need to enforce naming conventions or designate a special location where images need to be placed.

I've done the link-to-image route more, just because it requires less space in the tables, but I think both are perfectly acceptable.
