Re: where is my.cnf?
The my.cnf file stores start up options for the mysql daemon. If you don't want to specify options on the command line after safe_mysqld (like --user=mysql ), then put them in this file in the /etc directory.
The mysql installation comes with 4 different sample my.cnf files in /usr/local/mysql/support-files. You can edit one of these and copy it to /etc.
