Quick question about altering location of data directory on Linux

I have very little space left on my primary hard drive and I would like to change the location of my data directory from /var/lib/mysql to somewhere in my /home/ directory (which is a different hard drive). How do I do this exactly? I know I should change the my.cnf file to point "datadir" to the new location. Do I need to change the "basedir" or "socket" location? Is there anything else I need to do?

thank you in advance.
