Databases for dummies??

I'm looking for information concerning databases. My company is a direct marketing company for hospitality based business. Were building a website that people and customers can enter info. That info will be put into a database. A program will process this database for specific info. Once specified fields are found an email will be sent to the owner of such fields along with an email to the customer. When the owner responds to my customer I want that to be tracked back to the database for billing.

I undersatand the front end of the website. I'm lost on the backend.I'm on a shoestring budget so I'm learning as much as I can and finding out where I'll have to outsource. Any help or the point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
