MySQL -> prompt

I've just installed MySQL 4.1, I've never used it before.
I go into the command line client and successfully enter my password and the welcome message comes up with the mysql> prompt.
If I type help I get the help parameters but if I type a select statement, e.g. select 1+2 or SELECT VERSION(), CURRENT_DATE; I get a -> prompt with nothing else and nothing works, e.g. if I then type quit and press return I just get the same -> prompt.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong please.
Also, I've got the latest version of phpMyAdmin and I get the message
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client
I've tried changing my password to a less cryptic one and uninstalling and reinstalling MySQL but that hasn't worked.
I'm running Apache 2.0.53, PHP 4.3.11, MySQL 4.1.1 and phpMyadmin 2.6.2, all locally on my computer.
Thanks.
