Thanks, I'd worked out that I was ommitting the ;

I'd looked at the article that you referred to and I'm not exactly sure what a pre-4.1-style password is but I changed my password to a less cryptic one - letters only, mixture of upper and lower case, 15 characters, this didn't work.

The article also says
Upgrade all client programs to use a 4.1.1 or newer client library.
Is the client program phpMyAdmin?

Start mysqld with the --old-passwords option.
I'm not sure how to do this.
