stuck at the very start (mySQL local install on Mac OSX)

Hi all

This is my first message here.

I installed mySQL on Mac OSX, I want to setup a local testing server situation. I also have installed PHP.
Now, all the notes and tutorial I see tell me to use the Terminal to enter comands and 'manage' mySQL.
There's got to be a more user-friendly way! Using the Terminal is extremelly laborious, expecially since I have no idea what I am doing to start with.
I have tried creating a new user and a new password, and I don't know if I did or not!
I also have tried to create a new database (or to view existing databases) but without success

when I follow the tutorial and type:
SHOW DATABASES;
I get:
tcsh: SHOW: Command not found.

I have no idea what is going on, and there's got to be a more 'normal' way to manage this (via some user-friendly desktop software)?

Please help!
