Opening up my LAN for WAN access

Can anyone offer advice on how I make my local database available to my Customers (over the internet) whilst securing my LAN. I have been advised that opening up port 3306 on my firewall could lead to a variety of attacks.

In other words, is it possible to have a MySql database residing inside my LAN (so that we can all use it) and also make it available to my Customers without compromising my internal network and PC's?

Thanks
