Unique columns over two tables

My application has two tables which require the id column from each table to be unique across both tables. The current setup has both id columns form each table set up as an auto incremented integer, which obvisouly could result in matches between them.

Can anyone recommend a way if making these columns contain unique id's across both tables but still have an automated way of generating the data?

Thanks
