Error 2003: Can't connect to localhost (10061)

I'm trying to connect to the mysql server. I first typed mysqld --install and it succesfully installed. Then, when testing, i get this error:

I type ...bin/mysql test

ERROR 2003 cant connect to localhost (10061)

any ideas on what is causing this? I'm using Windows XP Pro... Thanks
