Using 'root' as a login/security issues?

Hello,

OK, so I have most of the access stuff figured out, but I have questions about signing on as '-u root'. If I sign in as simply that ('-u root'), I can only see the 'test' database, but if I sign in with my password, I can use the sample DBs I set up. So far, so good.

Question: should I stick with signing in as '-u root' or should I switch this? I have two other user names, but am having trouble logging in; when I use '-u name1 -p' I am denied access, though I can login as the users without prompting for a password. I am sure I'll figure this out sooner or later. Should I be concerned about security when using 'root', however?

Thanks very much.
