Can I store the location of an image file in a MySQL database?

I'm very new to this so please forgive my ignorance.

I want to create an image database for a photography web site, but I don't want to

store the actual images in the database because as I understand it they can't be

displayed directly from the database and can become very cumbersome.

So I want to know if I can store the file location in the database?

If so what is the best way to do this?

How is the connection made between the database and the page?

I would really appreciate any advice on this.

Thankyou.
