ORDER BY date when it's a varchar

Hey all, made the mistake of setting a field as a varchar which contains dates. They are all formatted the same mm/dd/yyyy but when you sort, 10,11,12 come before 9 so it's not correct.

A buddy said I might be able to use the UNIXtime or some similar function, is he correct?

Thanks in advance for any help in this.
