Date problem

Hello everybody,
I've a problem with "date" colomn type...
Manual says this:
"MySQL retrieves and displays DATE values in 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. The supported range is '1000-01-01' to '9999-12-31'. "
Well, when I put, e.g. , '1700-01-01', I get date resetting to '0000-00-00' instead!
I obtain this problem with every date before '1900-01-01'....
I get this problem either MySQL v.5.0.6beta or MySQL v4.1.
