Error when starting MYSQL

I'm running Linux Mandrake 10.1 and a newer version of MYSQL (4 something)

When I run this command (./bin/mysql_safe &) from the mysql directory, I get this error:

[root@cpe-65-31-82-1 mysql]# ./bin/mysqld_safe &
[2] 5860
[1] Done ./bin/mysqld_safe
[root@cpe-65-31-82-1 mysql]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/cpe-65-31-82-1.wi.res.rr.com.pid
050605 16:44:05 mysqld ended

Any Ideas?
