in unix you usually get the username and host so you see who are are and where you are. i think a normal user has a $ and a root has something else . i think its a # but i am on a PC with windoze right now...
however. when you start mysql you should get the "mysql>". try help; or \h to get the help. if you can do that then everything should be ok.
