4.1: Unable to connect

MySQL 4.1 on Solaris 8.
./mysqladmin -u root -p 'password'
Enter password:
./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'
Why is this happening? And what password is it asking?
