what to do in place of "ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE"

I was trying to figure out why this wasn't working with my SELECT statement then after looking it up found out that it's new in version 4.1.0 and my web hosting provider is only running 4.0.22.

Is there an easy way to perform the same task in MySQL version 4.0.22?
