Indexes

Hi all. I don't consider myself a newbie but this is definitely a newbie question. Can someone help me understand the impact of indexes, or point to an appropriate resource? I've found plenty of information regarding how to create indexs, different types, etc. What I haven't found (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place!) are the basics: what are the pros and cons of indexes.

I have a hunch, and if I've nailed it on the head then just say so and we'll call it a day. My understanding is that an index on a column makes it quicker to search through, but slower to insert and update. Is that all there is to it? Can anybody recommend best practices? For example, is indexing string columns okay or inefficient?

Thank you for reading.

Mark
