"What exactly do you mean "difference in months"?"

Sorry, I meant that the difference should be expressed as amount of months. Like: "yyyy1-m1-d1" - "yyyy2-m2-d2" = X months

About rounding: I was expecting the minor value. So:

""2012-01-02" minus "2012-01-01" - should be 0 or 1 month ?"
Should be 0.
