Pasted text not saving

I am using an html text area to POST data and then to insert it into a longtext field in a MYSQL (5.5.24 ) database. It works fine if text is typed into the text area and if very short blocks of text are pasted. However, if a block of text >300chars is pasted then nothing gets to MySQL at all – but it is posted ok as it exists in variables in the receiving php page. If you paste two blocks of 200 chars then it works! Can anyone throw any light on this?
