I don't use Perl to access MySQL, but I would search for an updated DBI:mysql. The other quick fix might be to create the user account in the old format as described and it should work. I also remember seeing a server switch for 4.1 that continued to support the old password format until such time you can update all clients to the new client library. Hope this helps... -Dave
