Yes. The only(?) way to provide failover is to first provide replication. Replication provides continual copying of the database from one machine (the 'master') to another (the 'slave' or 'replica'). Failover then is the switching from the dead machine to the replica.

I think AWS (etc) periodically take full backups of your machine(s). From that, they can build a new instance (and failover), but that how many hours or days old is that backup? I assume you want something better than that.
