Sez who? Please provide SHOW CREATE TABLE for each of the tables; the COLLATION on `Word` is the definitive answer.

UPPER() takes an insignificant amount of time. But hiding an indexed field inside a function call prevents use of that index, hence leading to a huge inefficiency.
