Long story is too short.
* You upgraded the OS, and it reformatted the disk?
* Reinstalled the _same_ version of MySQL?
* "after the reboot mysqld would not start" -- What is in mysqld.err?
* Did you change any my.cnf (my.ini) settings?
* "completely purged mysql-server 5.5" -- What do you mean? Did you delete the entire .../mysql/... directory tree? (That includes your data!)
