Thanks to all who responded to my post. I wound up doing it another way, by using Oracle's(?) MySQL installer for Mac OS X, including a MySQL Preferences Panel that launches the mysql daemon. That also established the connection. (Incidentally, it didn't put /usr/local/mysql/bin into my $PATH, needed dto invoke mysql on the command line; I had to put coding for that into my .profile myself.)
