Problem adding auto increment with csv import

I apologize if I'm rehashing old info. I searched the web and this forum for a solution, and I've tried all of the suggestions without success.

I'm trying to import a csv file without an id field using phpMyAdmin. I created a new table with the ID field set to DOUBLE, NOT NULL, AI, with all remaining fields corresponding to the csv file.

On my first attempt, I found that the csv import did not align the data into the proper fields.

On my second attempt, I indicated which columns should receive imported data. I got the error message: "Invalid column count in CSV input on line 1."

I've searched for documentation and the forums for detailed descriptions on my AI options, but to no avail.
