SHOW FIELDS traffic

I am trying to follow up on some performance issues on my server and am looking as some of MySQL stats. I am seeing this very odd statistic:

show errors 0 0.00 0.00%
show fields 16 k 16.20 k 30.78%
show grants 2 2.03 0.00%

Show Fields is 30% the query types! And that is 16 k Show Fields queries in about an hour. If there any reasonable reason for this?

The server has a couple of web apps I created (which do not use Show Fields), a drupal site, a couple of other fairly low traffic apps and a few few utilities.

This seems very strange to me. Does anyone have any insights about what is means or might be a reason?
