auto.cnf on cifs share

I'm trying to use DATADIR on a NTFS(cifs) share.
On system startup mysql (5.6.21 running Linux Mint 17) refuse to start complaining about auto.cnf.
I suspect it's because ntfs does not support ownership.
Is there a solution?
Thanks
