Mysql saving fractions

I want to save amounts of old currency in a field. I do not want to do any maths on it. I just want to store it and retrieve if faithfully. The currency old British pounds, shillings and pence includes quarter fractions of a penny. ALT+0188. ~0189 and ~0190 ¾ can easily be created in the input form, but they are not retrived. Is there a way of doing this please. I am using TinyText and utf8_general_ci.

a typical value is £-s-d like 2-14-10½

Thanks in advance
Stephen
