You're not the first developer to discover that the database design on which your app depends is dodgy.
"Edit mode" is a construct your app uses. Before you analyse that issue, though, you need to bulletproof the data design. That will include fixing parent-child disjunctions and putting all updates inside transaction blocks that protect such relationships and maintain concurrency. Once that's done, you may find you no longer need a conwept of "edcit mode".
