Can't start MySQL

Hi

I recently downloaded MyQL Community Edition (mysql-5.6.26-osx10.9-x86-64) to my laptop. My operating system was Mac OS X 10.6.8, which I subsequently found out is no longer supported. I downloaded Mac OS X 10.10.5. However when I try to open MySQL in Systems Preferences I get a box saying the MySQL Server has stopped and that I need to click Start MySQL Server to start it. I do this and I get a box telling me to enter my administrator password, which I do. I then click Start MySQL Server again and nothing happens. Can anyone help me with this?

Andrew
