If you mean hierarchy column, I think it is not exactly what you thought.
This field contains the parent hierarchy combined with the record ID.
In one query you can find all parents of the record.
The idea need a lot of improvement but I believe it will be a solution to lack in MySQL for hierarchy like 'START WITH .. CONNECT BY' in Oracle SQL.
