Yes, InnoDB has 2-3x larger footprint than MyISAM. But there are many reasons to stay with InnoDB.

VARCHAR(500) and TEXT are virtually identical. About the only difference is that the former will truncate at 500 characters, whereas the latter will truncate at 64K bytes. (Yes, I mean "characters" for one and "bytes" for the other.

For maintenance reasons it is usually better to build big InnoDB tables with innodb_file_per_table ON.
