space management

I was introduced to 5.1.59-rel13.0-log Percona Server (GPL) mysql server, which is running out of space on physical disk. I see different engines on this server, some of them are ARCHIVE, some of them InnoDB. I was doing a lot of purging of old records, but the space was not released - we have innodb_file_per_table ON, and we cannot optimize tables, because there is no space available anymore. However, I see some old archive tables, that I would like to drop, perhaps, it will release the space? Does DROP TABLE with archive engine requires any extra space? I am afraid to perform anything which requires extra space right now, because don't have any... Please help?
