Changes to database tables using php my admin

Hi
I was using a script to upload new products to my online shop which is using MySQL 5.5.52-cll and i got an error message that the products table column products_model lengths value was to short and set at 12. So i used phpMyAdmin via cpanel to change the value to 20 which is now long enough, but i still get the same error, i saved the changes. do i need to do anything else like refresh or upload/export etc the database or should the changes take effect automatically after i saved them?
