One connection is created per table at query time. The connection will stay open until wait_timeout on the remote server kicks in, as I had expected. There's nothing more to it afaict.
I saw some unusual behavior which prompted my original post. However, I tracked it down to a peculiarity between my usage pattern and my configuration.
