This problem is more widespread than you might think.

On my system, I ran several FULLTEXT BOOLEAN MODE searches with the following results:
'+aeronautics +company' (41)
'"aeronautics company"' (3)
'+aeronautics +company -"aeronautics company"' (0)

Try a search like the following on your system, but sit down first:
'+space +shuttle -"space shuttle"'
'+united +states -"united states"'

I find this more than a little disturbing.
