error connecting from windows server 2003 to mysql server on linux

I have 2 server's (wondows & Linux) both running mysql 5.1 server and they are connected via a Netgear Router, the problem i have is that when i connect to the mysql server on the liunux machine it gives me an error and vice versa. the connection method i am using is as follows: mysql -user -password -hostIpAddress

please assist!!!!!!!
