MySQL failure

I installed MySQL on Ubuntu Hardy Heron using
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
I attempted to run mysql and received this error message
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
Any help would be great
