Installing Mysql

I am very new to MYSQL and I still do not know if I have it installed properly. I want to develop a data base on my windows PC, later to upload to a server. It is in my programs menu and I do get a prompt. But whem I try to execute some SQL commands it all disappears off the screen.

Is it not installed properly or what, please help?

I really really need help.
