After many many hours and unsuccessful un/ re-installations of MySQL I got it finally to work again.
My key success action after following Jean-Paul's suggested steps was that I did not choose the default location for the data, i.e. c:\ProgramData\MySQL because this directory was not created during previous installations.
Hopefully that helps someone else and saves a lot of frustration.
