Does anybody has the knowlegde to find a solution for this problem with my system?

mysql start
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I[root@localhost /]# service mysql start
Starting MySQL................................... ERROR!

mysqld_safe -u mysql
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
STOPPING server from pid file /var/lib/mysql/mysqld.pid
071229 09:42:18 mysqld ended

I do not have the mysqlsock on my system, and i commented the lines on my.cnf for
for datadir and basedir, but i do not why i do not have the mysql.sock file.

Do I have to reinstall the Mysql, I am running version 5.0.24 and it is and upgrade from 4.xx, running on fedora C
