Hi Everybody,

I'm some what a novice when it comes to Linux and mysql. I recently started upgrading my current mysql from version 3.23 to version 4.1.12. I have installed the following .rpm files in order, one by one.

MySQL-shared-compat-4.1.11-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-shared-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-server-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-Max-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-embedded-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-devel-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-client-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-bench-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm

When I was done installing, I tried to run mysql my typing mysql at the terminal and I received the following error:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/myself/mysql.sock' (2)

I truly after 5 hrs. of searching the on line mysql reference manual and looking of what and where in the heck (apology for my language) mysql.sock is and how I should configure my.cnf, downloading the .tar.gz version of the same mysql version to compare the installed and downloaded files to see what i missed. I pounded and searched my brain for any kind of possible solutions that would help me solve this problem, other files that I thought would help me solve this problem. I have given up...

I would greatly appreciate it if someone can shine a light on this subject and sort of give me a hit on where I can start solving this problem. I will be greatly in dept.

Please help me I'm desperate for any kind of solution to this nightmare!!

With kind regard,
V.S.
