mysqld won't start on non-standard port (443) on Ubuntu 8.04

I'm trying to set up a machine for a developer here to build a back end database on, and he's working over the internet. I've got a DMZ host set up with Ubuntu 8.04 server and I've changed the port from 3306 to 443 to get around him having to try and jump through all the hoops to get their firewall changed to open port 3306. However, when i change the port in my.cnf and try to restart the server, the startup fails. if I change the my.cnf back to port 3306, it will start again. I've verified that nothing else on the server is running on that port (only on ports 80 and 22). So why won't this work?

Server is Ubuntu 8.04, mysql is the latest version of 5.0 as that's what apt-get gave me when I asked it to install.
