I believe this could happen on machines that had 5.5 betas installed prior.
The installer does not throw away existing datafiles and will reuse the instance orphaned from prior installation (or it will reuse the data on upgrade, since installation 5.5.x=>5.5.y is handled as an upgrade).

The actual bug was introducing an extra column in the point release, and throwing an error if the column is not present. Alternative to this handling -adding this column on demand would be better.

The workaround for time being (I strongly guess) is wiping out %ProgramData%\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5 folder.
